The combined effects of storms and high tides had been taking its toll on the existing sea wall and groynes protecting the picturesque Edwardian town of Aberaeron on the west coast of mid Wales. Whilst it had never actually been breached, there had been occasions when the sea had threatened to flood the homes and businesses on the low-lying land between the A487 and the sea front. With regular patching repairs to the existing sea wall costing £100,000 there was an obvious need for the Welsh Assembly Government funded scheme.

The scheme consisted of 500m of the cross section shown with the exception of two rock groynes towards the southern end of the scheme near to the town where a slightly modified cross section was used.
