The shoreline between East-Wemyss and Dysart is exposed to erosion from south-easterly storms and long- period waves travelling from the east across the North Sea. For much of this century erosion has been reduced and even reversed by tipping coal mining waste on to the beaches of Wemyss, which was reworked and transported east by long-shore drift.

In recent decades, the tipping of mine waste has ceased and hence the erosion of the coast line has increased and it has become necessary to construct a defensive wall to protect the villages of East and West Wemyss and Dysart. With the help of funding from the Scottish Executive 1485 meters of rock armour revetment was constructed which involved importing over 100,000 tons of 1 to 4 ton rock armour directly by sea. GEOfabrics MP2000 was used as a filter separator under the rock armour due to its high strength and durability.
