Geotextile filters in rail

Research into the use of geotextiles shows a clear benefit in their use in enhancing the performance of existing track bed layers, or significantly reducing the required depth of construction. Geotextiles were shown to be effective as filter/separators when used between non-cohesive soils where the filer function was simply to allow the passage of water and to separate fines.

Railway Geotextile Filters

Mechanically bonded nonwoven geotextiles have been proven to have a superior performance to both heat bonded and woven geotextiles, this is due to their high strength and elongation.

RK1 is Geofabrics separation and filtration geotextile range for use between the track ballast and a sand layer or granular subgrade. Extensive and continual testing and development has demonstrated its world class-leading mechanical strength and hydraulic properties and long service life under dynamic loading conditions. This is as a result of the products:

  • High puncture resistance
  • High elongation to break
  • Superior abrasion resistance
  • Excellent filtration characteristics at all strains
  • UV resistance

Geofabrics produces two geotextiles that are specifically designed for track bed application:

RK1 Standard Rail Separator 

The standard rail geotextile and is used either in combination with a new sand blanket or where there is an existing good quality formation with a small percentage of coarse particles, i.e. less than 10% by weight <14mm.

RK9 Robust Geotextile 

Used in an existing good quality formation with a larger percentage of coarse particles, i.e. greater than 10% by weight >14mm.
