Geomembrane composites (FM/FMF)

Geomembranes act as a barrier to liquids and gasses, as such geomembranes are generally impermeable. They are used in applications where it is necessary to prevent the loss of water or toxic material.

FM / FMF Geomembrane composites

Extruded geomembranes are manufactured using relatively basic manufacturing processes, the manufacturing of geomembranes begins with the production of the raw materials, which include the polymer resin (plastic or rubber), and various additives such as antioxidants, plasticizers, fillers, carbon black, and lubricants (as a processing aid).

These raw materials (i.e., the “formulation”) are then processed into sheets of various widths and thickness by extrusion, calendaring, and/or spread coating. The formulation can be a plastic (e.g. PVC, HDPE, LLDPE) a rubber (e.g. EPDM, EVA) or a combination of the two.

It is important that geomembranes are protected from damage, both during the construction phase and often though it’s continued design life. The best way to protect a polymeric geomembrane is by using a thick Needlepunched nonwoven geotextile. Using its state of the art lamination process, GEOfabrics is able to manufacture and supply wide width composite whereby a membrane is supplied with a protective geotextile on either a single side (FM) or both sides (FMF) of a polymeric geomembrane. This factory controlled process ensures that the protection element of the system is supplied prefabricated thereby reducing the risk of damage on site and providing a much faster and economic method of installation.
